Taking the ferry is a scenic and affordable way to reach Margarita Island. Ferries depart from Puerto La Cruz and Cumana on the mainland, arriving at Punta de Piedras on the island. You can bring your car on most services.

Entry Requirements

Passport

A valid passport with at least 6 months remaining validity is required. Citizens of most countries do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days. U.S., EU, UK, Canadian, and Australian passport holders can enter visa-free.

Visa Information

Tourist visas are available on arrival or through Venezuelan consulates for nationalities that require them. Extensions up to 90 additional days can be requested at SAIME (immigration office) in Porlamar.

Health Requirements

No mandatory vaccinations are required for entry. COVID-19 restrictions have been fully lifted as of 2025. Yellow fever vaccination is recommended but not mandatory. Travel health insurance is strongly advised.

Getting Around Margarita

Taxi

Readily available at the airport, ferry terminal, and throughout the island. Negotiate the fare before getting in. Airport to Porlamar costs approximately $10-15 USD.

Rental Cars

Available at the airport and in Porlamar. International licenses accepted. Prices range from $25-50/day. Roads are generally good, though some secondary roads are unpaved.

Por Puesto (Shared Minibuses)

The most affordable option for getting around. Fixed routes connect major towns and beaches. Fares are typically $0.25-1.00 USD per trip.
